Amazing Old (and Free) Visualization Books

There are lots of great new books out there about graphics and data visualization. But have you ever taken a look at some that were written back before computer software? It turns out that most of these chart and visualization methods have been around for decades – it’s just that they used to draw them by hand.

I highly recommend these books to anyone. Besides the impressive graphics and nostalgia values, the writing quality and content advice are excellent – regardless of what century you are in.

Graphic Methods for Presenting Facts, Willard Cope Brinton (1914). Brinton not only presents a variety of graph types, he goes into quite a bit of detail on the decisions that go into making a well designed chart. Note the author’s sarcastic review of the first chart below – Ha!

In 1939, Brinton released a greatly expanded version of his book, entitled Graphic Presentation, which covers an amazing breadth of graphic methods (520 pages with separate chapters for 59 different graph types!) – including these beauties:

In a similar fashion to their work in Britain from Above, CGI and animation group 422 South map the daily patterns of those in the Netherlands in VPRO’s production of Netherlands from Above. It’s hard to get a grasp on what exactly I’m seeing, since I know next to nothing about the Netherlands and the video narration is in Dutch, but the visuals are beautiful. I get sent a lot of infographics on strange topics. I’m posting this one of an example. In this case, the weirdness of the topic is complemented by some odd analysis. I think I would have stayed away from comparing styles to who won and lost, and focused more on the distribution of colors and styles (over time maybe?). Often adding to the weirdness of these infographics is who sponsors them – this one comes via the Dish Network(?!?).

John Cochran blogs about his coursework at University of Virgina. His project on ‘Urban Metabolisms’ has this Sankey diagram of food being transported to New York City. Data is from The Federal Highway Administration (USDOT) Freight Analysis Framework.

The first Sankey diagram shows transports to New York (excluding the Northeastern States and transports within NY). The food supplied by other US states becomes relatively insignificant:
